ARROWHEAD DETECTOR I lived in the woods in arkansas and would find old indian burial mounds and searching outside of the mound I have found several arrowheads and some old stone skinning knives. Never dug up any graves but it might be intesting. sheesh....then the great spirits would haunt me....

I was told to always check where the outhouse stood on old homesteads as well as the old burn pits. One that surprized me was when I was told to check where the mailbox was located. Seems an old practice was to attach coins to letters for postage and many fell off. An old time detectorist told me to stand at the back door and imagine the direct path a person would take to any outbuildings, especially the barn and check all along that path.

It's amazing to me to think those things would still be there after all this time especially with the excavation & traffic by now. But as technology improves and machines are better fine tuned it does stand to reason things missed in the past could be found now. On a non related note - there is a guy in Dallas who will go toss a handful of .22 shells out on Dealy plaza now & then... just to watch tourists comb the lawn & go 'oh my, look what I found....'

I like to search old swiming holes but this does require an underwater detector and scuba or snorkel gear to get at the deep coins. The fact that it is a hassle is waht often makes the find better.

I have actually seen people on the beach with metal detectors... they also carry these pitcher type containers that you dig with and it sifts through the sand at the same time. I watched as this one guy who was finding all kinds of stuff. So I asked him what he's been able to find... and he said anything from rings, braclets, anklets, and some coins. His best find was this small, antique diamond ring. He got it appraised and said it dated back to the early 1900's and it was worth almost $7,000. Now he said he's hooked!! Can't say that I blame him!!

I work in the logging business so we run across old house places all the time out in the woods. I have tried a couple of places but found nothing but drink tabs and old food cans. I am going to the beach in a month and going to take my detector and try it out on the sand. I'll let ya'll know if I find anything.
My dad used to hunt for old Civil War artifacts here in North Carolina where there were some battlefields. He found some pretty nice stuff. He always made me dig.LOL
