Please help me identify a token. It has a large "V" on one side and "good for five cents in trade" in a circle with the numbers 3931 in the middle. It’s much worn but by the faint images I’m guessing it’s a love token. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have tried just about every serch i could think of including "V" for Victory and "V" for Vendetta.

another idea was that it was actually an "A" for adult/alcohol/absinthe

Any other search Ideas would help

This is one of the many AMUSEMENT TOKENS, used in slot machines, ca. 1900-1940 or so.  With the "V", it would have been more like ca. 1900-1913 in manufacture.  The "V" is most likely taken from the older "V" nickels, which were replaced by the Buffalo Nickels in 1913.  The Liberty Head "V" nickels were used from 1883-1913.  As the general public was quite familiar with the "V" on the Liberty Nickels, it was used on a number of tokens, as well.  The number was a control number, and the owner of the slot machines would have gotten a batch of tokens all with the same number to use exclusively in his machines.  If someone used a token with a different number, and won a jack-pot, the owner could refuse to pay it.  There are no known records of which numbers correspond to which location.  There is a book that lists these tokens, with the known numbers, but it isn't handy.  As a type, this type of slot machine token is exceedingly common (and thus, fairly inexpensive).
