I'm a firm believer that an auction ( including an estate or state seisure auction) is the true market. However, you should enter the pit with complete knowledge as to the market value and what you are buying. If you don't know how to grade a coin and don't know market values, what are you doing bidding at any auction or buying a coin?

I've bought and sold on ebay, never a slab.
I've bought raw coins, which when I've submitted graded above stated grade on ebay.
I think ebay has its place.

There is fraud on ebay. Anyone with common sense can spot it quickly. But you find that everywhere in society. You'll find unethical coin dealers at coins shows. You can find coin dealers in prison (My local coin dealer went to prison.)

When it comes to buying slabs-- if it doesn't look right don't buy it.

On the other hand, the problem with ebay is the clutter.
People want a high asking price and don't place their items up for auctions. You have to wade through junk, that nobody would buy. Those people need to go to a flea market or do something else.

In addition, I think because the fee is low there is collusion between friends to force the price higher. This wouldn't happen at an auction with fees.

And that too is really a shame. It's too bad more people don't get together and make more coin clubs and then possilby a coin show or two. Not sure but I think this is how it got all started around me. Now we have a coin show withing 15 miles of me on almost every Sunday of the Month. Also, some really big ones for several days once in a while. Of course this is why the internet helps out so many people where these situations don't exist. Guess around me we are really lucky.

Then your missing out on some great opportunities. You just need to be careful, and be skeptical of everything you see, unless numerous excellent photographs are provided.

Not really. I go to about 2 to 4 coin shows a Month. I also frequent numerous coin stores and flea markets where coin dealers sell. I've never seen anything on ebay or anywhere else on the internet where I couldn't beat the price by an excessive amount. And I do get to see the real coin I'm buying, not a possible fake, copy, etc. No doctored up photographs either. And no postage, handling, insurances, restoking fees, no No returns policies, etc. At coin shows what you see is what you get.
And too at a decent coin show as you get to know dealers and you want to purchase sonething but not sure of, you can ask many others for thier opinions.
You can haggled prices at flea markets and coin shows. You can ask dealers you get to know to look for something for you.
And I've found that many dealers purchase entire collections and take them apart and place each coin in a flip for individual sales. They then throw away the Albums and folders. So I've asked and get many of them free rather than them throwing them away.
I've gotten to know many dealers and some have given me free coins.
So just what am I missing? I do look at ebay and other on line auction places and so far have never, ever seen anything for less than what I can get it for. So again, just what am I missing?

So far I've never purchased a coin on ebay or any other type of auction place. In the future I'll double that too.

iOffer.com is the worst of them all, but you can get good coins at ebay.

ebay os like scamming central of the world. a baby can get away with a scam on ebay.it may have lots of selection,in the end,you don't know what you'll get. the best place would be a nearby jewellery store of a store that buys old junk.(not value village)hobby stores also work

Remember there are many people that get burned on ebay and there are thousands of times that, that swear by ebay. Some get coins worth many times thier values for much less and there are many that have lost money on the deals. ebay is no worse than a coin store, coin show, flea market, etc. YOU have to know what your doing.

I'm a bit of an anti-ebay guy when it comes to coins. I know there are good people out there but they are far and few
