Dr. William Sheldon standardized coin grading by developing a 70 point scale for classifying coin condition. It is now known as the Sheldon Scale which runs from 1 to 70. Originally designed for large cents, but it is now used for all US coin series.

Dr sheldon originally assigned what he called basil values to each coin. so according to him a Fine 12 coin was worth 3 times what a Good 4 coin was worth and so on. Obviously it doesn't work today as an MS 64 in most series would be worth far more then 16 times what a good 4 is worth. But it is interesting how the scale came about. read his book penny whimsey, I bought it before  I ever bought my first large cent and it was worth the money.

The idea of the grade being directly proportional to the values is quite interesting. Imagine a rare MS65 Morgan worth only 65/63 (about 1%) more than an MS63. It shows that the emphasis collectors place on gem BU coins is relatively recent.
