Here is the reverse of a 67 Kennedy half. Very hard to tell if this was just damaged or if it is an error. I know first glance says someone beat the crap out of it. But the front is nice, unc condition, rim is fine, and most of the damage is just inside the circle of stars. Edited by Gilly - 21 Sep 2009 at 9:37am |

Welcome to the forum!
Your photo isn't sharp enough to really tell, though it may just be heavily corroded. If you can, please get a closer, sharper photo. Thanks! Isaiah |

The problem is getting the forum to take a large enough photo. I will try some more.

Thanks for the photos. I know it's hard taking photos, you've done remarkably well. Still, this is strange. Do I see a few indistinct letters, and bits of designs in there? If so, it's an error referred to as a clashed die. But, maybe it's just damaged. Let me run it through my computer editing software and invert the color. Maybe that can reveal a little more. Hope this helps!

I am really a novice, but yes I almost think I see design elements, or mangled or distorted elements, definitely not like a bored kid with a hammer.
Also, if you notice the last 3 letters of "United" and on into the first letter or two of "States", is what I think would represent a crack in the die, in other words like a raised line. Also again note the obverse is very nice. This has been around either my mother in laws house, belonged t her aunt who was a bit of a packrat (lots and lots of plain old silver coins, this was in a special area thought, with some Morgans and Peace dollars.

I circled some interesting areas, though, yes, I do see what you mean. agree with you. It's quite possible that a cracked die could be used to make a coin that was also a significant die clash, like this one might be. And, as far as the surface, it looks like a die was used that was at the end of it's life, as evidenced by the "Orange peel" effect. Honestly, yes, I do believe it's an error, in my personal opinion. If you need any more help with this, please let me know. Also, if you have any other interesting coins, please let me know, I'm glad to help. :)
If you can't get me here, feel free to email me. ~Isaiah |

I was going to take a bunch of coins in to a coin shop this week. Mostly they are what I believe are referred to as "sliders", old stuff only really worth the silver, (walkers and Mercurys with dates completely gone, Washingtons not much better, some Peace and Barber Dollars that aren't rare dates, etc.
I could bring this Kennedy in and see what he thinks. I know this shop has been around a few decades and I trust him, really nice guy, even threw in a few nice coins when i bought a 20th Century Type set case from him.

PS Again it's a 67 so silver clad, and the obverse looks very nice, no distortion, no signs of trauma, either at the mint or at the mercy of some idle hands, I would call it AU or EF with a bunch of plus signs on the condition of the obverse. Edited by Gilly - 21 Sep 2009 at 11:16am |

Yes, if you do bring this to him, let me know what he says, please. I'm curious. Isaiah edit also, be sure to point out the areas that look to be a possible clashed die to him. :) Edited by Isaiah - 21 Sep 2009 at 11:15am |
