missing date on penny

   New to coin errors and this site. Thought someone out there might help me. I have a wheat pennie where the 4th number of the date is missing. It reads 194_ for the date. Has a "S" mint mark. The last number has not been worn off, it just does not exist. Does anyone know of this error? Is there a particular date I should be looking at?

	This is a common error called a "filled die". Usually grease is the culprit. The grease fills up the die and when the coin is stamped, the letter, number, etc., that was filled with grease does not stamp on the coin. They are very cool though.....

	I doubt that's the case for this particular coin. 1946S cents are notorious for having been struck with worn dies, many of them to the point that the 6 of the date is worn nearly smooth off the die. When the struck coins are circulated the remains of waht would have been a weak digit wear off completely. I have seen it hundreds of times. This cent is very likely a 1946S, but could possibly be 1948S or 1949S. Similar circumstances surround these two dates, but they are far less common than the missing digit 1946S.

	Man, I learned something new again today. I've seen BU Jefferson nickels that looked all sorts of ugly because of worn dies, but not Lincolns. I would also love to see a picture of the coin.

	I've heard of filled dies but I've never ran across a error.

	They are actually common as already noted. However, at coin shows around here, they do get a $2 to $10 asking price and many are sold. Very common with the 2000 Cents also. I was just going through a pile of coins I received and there was one in the 197? like that. Gee, the worst thing is you will never know if there were really 5 digits to that date.
