Copper? Is the coin the same size as a regular nickel? Same thickness? You have two possible scenario's. One (and this is the most unlikely) it was struck on the wrong planchet. Two, someone has played with the coin since leaving the mint.
It could have been dipped into some chemical, painted, plated, or half a dozen other things that people with too much time on their hands do with coins.

I'll put a pic up as soon as I get my camera back from my daughter. I examined it under a microscope and there are deep scratches on and it's all copper.
