Anyone ever notice that possibly 30 to 40 % of all Mercury Dimes have rotated reverses?

You lost me on this one.....

We have a few thousand sitting here in the shop and not a one with a rotated reverse. (slight rotation is acceptable in all series) However if you are referring to a major rotation, please share.

No I don't mean they all have a major rotation, but many have from a few degrees to about 45 dgrees. I have 7 sets of Mecury Dimes in Whitman Classic Albums all complete. (except still missing 2-42/41's). Many, many, many years ago I noticed that the obverses were all lined up but when I turned the page numerous ones were slanted all over the place. Some to the left and some to the right. I remember going through my other albums of coins, 10 Lincolns, 3 Buffalos, 2 Liberty Head Dimes and on and on and on and none were as commonly rotated as the Mercury Dimes. I pointed this out to many coin dealers I know and they mostly were surprized and really didn't notice until I mentioned it. Then as they carefully turned Mercs over top to bottom they too ended up with about 30 % rotated. I really have never seen or heard of any other denomination with such a common feature. One nice thing about it is some years back I was able to buy a 16D for a greatly reduced price when I pointed it out that the back was rotated.

I just counted my set and there were 27 that were rotated with the largest rotation being about 35-40 degrees .  An interesting phenemenon indeed!

Thanks to nationalcoindealer's suugestion, I started to assemble a series of these Mercury Dimes in order of rotation. I am planning on making a plastic case with the worst rotated from the left going towards straight up and then slowly going toward a right rear rotation. One of my worst rotated Mercs is a 16D but to make this display it will have to join the mess. One 21 is also pretty tilted. Right now they are all in 2x2's but I think I'll have to somehow make a display that will hold them in place without any additional holders such as the 2x2's. It will be fun showing the fronts all lined up and then the reverses a complete mess but in order.

Keep checking out yours.
