Below the eagles talons there can be no mark, or an S, or an O, or a CC. These marks determine which mint created the coin. No mark means the Philly mint struck the coin. These marks can change the value of the coin, due to differing rarities...
![]() Example of a 'o' mint mark from the New Orleans mint.
The mint mark on any U.S. coin shows which mint struck the coin. Below are the mint marks shown on U.S. coinage:
C = Charlotte, NC |

HI!
My name is David Benus and I'm from Hungary - middle Europe. Excuse me, my english is not so good, but I have a question for you. Yesterday I got a simple Morgan dollar, and I'm not sure, that it is really original. After the cleaning... it became almost uncirculated dollar, and I don't really think this coin is 121 years old. I found some websites about Morgans. In this site... http://www.coinpage.com/Morgan
Well, I would like to ask for your help, how can I decide that my Morgan is original.
By the way.. the parameters of the coin is original (weight, diameter, etc.) and I'm sure it is real silver (one of my friend carried out a silver probe by something acid, and it prooved silver). I bought this coin 3500 Ft (it is about 17$ in Hungary) but who sold it is not a professional in foreign coins, just in old hungarian money.
If somebody like answer to my question I could send some high resolution pictures of the Morgan in e-mail.
Thank you very much indeed for your help!
David Benus,
Hungary these are small pictures of my coin

They look real, but we generally recommend that you not clean the coins. Price is about right.

Hey there "uralwolf", welcome to the world of US coin people's hobby. Don't worry about your English. If you ever get a chance to talk to some of our Engineers or Chemist around here you'ld find out your English is probably better than ours. I know mine stinks. If it wasn't for spell check I'd never write anything. Again, WELCOME.
