The appearance is indicative of die fatigue.

probably is due to circulation  damage or maybe a little die chip in that area tha's giving the appearnce of an eight.

J,

IMHO(In My Honest Opinion)  It is either a worn die  when pressed or a circulated nickel with wear.  It could be a combination of both.    It is a good question and I hope other's have a reply on what it might be.

I have a 1913 S type 1 buffalo nickel that I have been looking at for a while..  It is in great shape but I was looking at the mint mark S and found that it almost looks like an 8?  Could this be 2 transposed s's or is it normal?  Has anybody ever seen anything like this?  Any help would be appreciated..  If you click on the pic it will give you a larger image..  Thanks, J
