WARNING: THESE PEOPLE ARE A RIP-OFF COMPANY. Where I live in South Florida, the retired snowbirds come down to their condos for the winter, to escape the snow. Its normal to see full page ads in the newspaper from many estate buyer companies saying they are buying gold' silver; jewelry; coins; anything valuable. Its a normal process. You have to decide for yourself if the price they offer for an item is a price you can live with. they have to make money. everything is condition sensitive; and so forth. MAIN POINT: This weekend in my town was International Coin Collectors Association. These people are a complete joke. I went to their website to email a complaint. No contact information. The whole website is one page; the same page that they printed in the local newspaper. They're not a coin collector association. The name is misleading to make you think they have credibility. And they have NO credibility. Only thing they do is buy merchandise for resale. And they will rip you off: Lets start with the watches: a group of Four small gold keywind pocket watches. I had three of the watch cases tested for gold at a jeweler. This clown who calls himself Keith, at the International Coin Collectors association, proceeded to tell me without the cases marked "14k gold" or "18k gold" etcetera, he would have to ASSUME they were gold plated. f'ing ignoramus!!!! The cases all have hallmarks. The hallmarks can be looked up. The entire industry of watch collectors and dealers uses the Watch guide written by Mr. Cooksey Shugart and Mr. Richard Gilbert. Shugart who just retired has for years put in the first chapter of the book, a pictured illustration of solid-gold hallmarks that were used on antique 19thc pocket watches. These people advertised in the newspaper ad that they wanted to buy pocket watches, and they sit me with some clown appraiser who doesnt know how to test a watch case or look up a hallmark. ....the guy looked up something on his computer; I dont know what he was looking at. He said one watch was listed as three-quarter plate. dumbass: 3/4 plate refers to the design of the brass plate used for the frame of the watch movement. He proceeded to tell me 3/4 plate refers to gold plating. 3/4 plate does not refer to gold plating. Ignoramus. NOW lets discuss the coins: I brought two albums: 14 walking liberty halves; and 6 Morgans: I kid you not: the guy told me $32 for the halves; and $75 for the Morgans!!! holy f'ing sh--!!!!!! The ad in the paper said they pay greysheet prices!!! This clown never looked a greysheet the whole time I sat at the table. If I round off figures in my head, I know the silver content of a walking liberty halves is close to half the silver content of a morgan. $32 for 14 Walking Liberty Halves is barely ten to fifteen percent of the scrap silver prices. $75 for the six morgans is close to silver scrap value, BUT the ad said GREYSHEET prices. I did not get a Greysheet appraisal!!! This combined total of 20 coins are all mid to high AU coins of different mints and dates!!!!!! If INTERNATIONAL COIN COLLECTORS ASSOCIATION comes to a hotel near you, bring some stuff for them to buy. See for yourself what Im talking about.

Wow you seem very angry so they did not offer to buy your watches so that makes them rip off and you did not like the offer they made on your coins where is the issue the items are yours to sell or keep. I went to one of there events down in Florida and was more than happy with what they paid me i had a 1oz gold coin and they paid me 10% less than spot they need to make money too wall mart has a 150% mark up Sams club 50% your local jewelry store 1200% Its not crooked its capitalism. That's what runs the country do you really think ford sells that car at 22,000 dollars and only makes it for fun no the employees that made that car want there cut the shipping of the car the dealer of the car every one gets a cut you want spot of melt open a refinery. And as far as gray sheet no one pays gray sheet its like the red book of coins the dealers use it to sell coins and yes they need to make a profit so they can pay rent taxes water electric and employees watch pawn stars thats real true commerce.

You may well be 100% correct in your valuation of that or any company. HOWEVER, be carefull of your wording. There are many ways to find out who you are for organizations with sufficient resourses. And once they find you, you would be forced in Court to prove your allogations. I suggest you go back and review your post for any statement that could be considered a false accusation.
I only mention this since it really did happen on another coin forum where someone made the wrong statements and could not prove them. Yes he was right as to what he was saying but he had no proof and again, you could be tracked down by your computers IP address and/or many other things.

It is statements like this that I was referring to. Note you actually mentioned someone by name. Then further noted his mental capacity as ignoramus. These are the types of statements that end people up in court having to prove what they stated via possibly millions on the internet. It could be argued that you have distroyed the credibility of this individual.
Nowadays with attonrneys out there just looking for ways to make money, it is not smart to say anything that can not be proved.

Whoa! You take it way too personal. I too have tested many of these. More to refine my approach with customers and insure that they see me as trustworthy. And I agree with you, but so what? Bernie Madoff was a crook. These folks are crooks. Most of the "Gold 4 Less" crowd are. But so is Home Shopping Network when they sell coins.
When I have folks in their 70's come into my store and want to sell their silver, gold, and platinum plated State Quarter Sets they bought from HSN, I want to cry. They were sold a bill of goods too!
If you want to close down ICCA I say more power to you. I would love to see HSN quit selling coins. But we live in America...and I for one, want freedom to continue ringing.

In almost all instances those places have already had an Attorney or in some places a mob of Attorneys verifying every word they say. They are carefull of the smallest things such as can you say could, should, would, can, might, maybe, etc.
There are many people out there that actually earn a living via law suites.
When they make almost any statement about coins, Gold, Silver, etc., someone has inspected every possible thing that could go wrong.
Unfortuately we now live in a society where very little is really safe.

Carl, you are absolutely correct! Whatever our perception may be, the reality can be way different. These organization, no matter what we may think have protected themselves and continue to, against false claims and slander.

I once worked in a company where every new employee was told that any phone calls you receive from someone you don't know, either hang up or forward to your supervisor. This is done due to the possibility of someone saying one wrong word and poof, a law suite.

And to that end...not to get off topic but I saw on T.V. last night an ad for the U.S. Mint's new 9/11 Medal. They say that a part of the proceeds go to the 9/11 Memorial. Then they actually say beware of the other medals that call themselves "official" when they are not. No doubt our "greedy government" can't stand the competition with the "pop-up" medal! Lol What's our world coming to?

And as I was saying such companies have a large attorney organization verifying every word they state. For example it was stated "a part of the proceeds go to ......" What part? What is ment by proceeds? Exactly what Memorial and to whom does this money go to? Is it stipulated in the contracts just how any such moneys are to be distributed? It actually takes an attorney to really understand what is being said in public today.

So I am looking at this 2006 Australian Red Back Spider silver coin on
Ebay that is selling for 1100-1500 dollars and I'm trying to get my head
around that. It originally sold from the Perth mint for 74.00 au .
This coin is gorgeous but what in the world makes it so valuable???? The
2 coins on ebay now end Monday night

My understanding the watches these guys were looking at if not marked gold were probably not solid gold. Many of the old watches are marked “20 years” this is a very old style of gold platting. Buyers that do show up and buy at hotels do break laws. There is mandatory holding laws that require buyers to hold property after purchasing for a period of time. California requires buyers to hold merchandise on site for a thirty day period. Pawn shops, second hand dealers, and jewelers all have to follow this procedure. Do you think these traveling road shows are compliant with these laws? I do not think so! Does law enforcement enforce these laws? Very Rarely! |
