How do I determine the value of my coin?

We get asked frequently to evaluate the worth of coins. Occasionally someone will also ask us to buy their collection, and we certainly do that for uncommon or higher grade coins. Many of the common coins cannot easily be sold via our website so we do limit the offers we make. Below is a guide to help you determine the value of your coin.

Pricing Notes
Silver Dollars
Most people believe any silver dollar is worth significant money. However, many grades of Morgan and Peace dollars are quite common. Unless you have a key date, or high grade silver dollar the coin is worth close to the values listed above.

Modern Proof Sets
Many modern proof sets (1958 and later) are priced on a commodity basis, and have less value than the original mint issue price. Modern Silver proof sets that have state quarters HAVE appreciated in value.

I would like to add that heritage.com/coins has a great record of recent auctions. You can look up the coin and grade in questoin and get a great idea of what coins are really selling for.

Make sure you note that toned or rainbow coins sell for a large premium so look for ones that resemble yours. The archive include pictures.

These are great resources, but most are out of my league right now.  How does the little business person survive in the coin world?  I am just a rookie at coin collecting even though I have been collecting coins for fun over 20 years.  I am at the point now that I have to sell some of them and I would like to get into selling more and more, but alas I can't right now as money is tight.  Is there any free programs or sights that you can learn from?

Selling coins generally takes a capital investment of some sort. The sites above are really good resources.

Hm today i took out my old box of my coins and decided to figure out how much they were worth so ive been looking for sites like theese all  day
to bad i didint find thoes sites this morning to figure out the value of 90% of my coins... nothing

Many  coins are valuable when you are interested in purchasing them, and almost worthless when you are interested in selling them.
Don't use coin collecting for an investment!

Why is there such a difference between the listed retail prices for a 1938D over S in the Redbook vs. what they are actually asking for them by dealers?  (AU-50 for $30.00 and $250.00 for the same coin.)

That is the dumbest statement i have ever seen. Coins earn more than stock, mutual funds, and a savings account CONBINED!!! New collecters, dont listen to this, you just have to try when you go to sell, e-bay and bidville are the only 2 good auction sites for coins. DONT SELL TO DEALERS, ESPECIALLY BIG COMPANIES LIKE LITTLETON!

The dumbest statement I ever heard was that you can't make money on the stock market. Investments in the stock market have supported me for the last 10 years, and with the exception of gold which has kept its value, the only real appreciation I have seen from coins, is my hoard of 2001 Silver Eagles purchased for $ 40.00 ea.

you just need to learn what coins are worth, use greysheet bid prices, redbook prices are always a little on the high side. ive made 400 bucks in the past two months off buying and reselling.

That's great, More power to you! I just made $350.00 buying the inventory of a hobby shop's N Scale houses and reselling them one by one on eBay.
My stock portfolio gained over $6,000.00 in the last month. I usually hold stocks for 6 weeks or so unless the charts show weakness for the future. I sell 50% of my gains as soon as they double my investment and sell 100% of the stocks that break through the 10% loss canyon.
The net results are consistent gains overall through out the year.
