Both factors in assessing coin values

Multiple factors come into play that affect the grade of a coin, including those coins submitted to a third-party grading service for certification. Among the factors that can result in a coin's grade being lowered, affecting the coin's value, are hairlines and die striations (or die scratches).

It is important to be able to tell the difference, since hairlines tend to have a negative effect on a coin's grade, while die striations/scratches sometimes do not affect value. Most grading services, however, will lower the grade of a coin if extensive, distracting die scratches are found.
