Copper Core Buffalo Nickel Only (one) other found

   obtained this 1937 S Indian Head Nickel several years ago, along with several others. 
I thru it in the junk box because I thought it was heavly corroded.
I recently looked at it thru the microscope to find that the corrosion was copper - the outer layer is nickel or whatever, and has dissappeared leaving a copper core.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what this may be?

	Strange, I think it may be coated, not a copper core...

	Hello Silverhawk If you go to www.coinresource.com/guide/exhibit/copper_buffalo.htm you will find a 1920 (copper) nickel struck on a full size copper planchet of the same diameter, thickness, and wieght of a buffalo nickel. Composition is 89%CU, 8%ZN and 3%SN. Weight is 4.96 grams. This is a discovery coin, and is a unique (until now) off-metal Buffalo Nickel unreported in Breen, Judd, or Pollock. The 1920 Buffalo Nickel above is the first and only copper Nickel struck on a Full Size Copper Planchet reported to date. They were test pieces that were never melted on destroyed. The 1937s copper Nickel I listed on your site under (nickels) appears to be the same as the 1920, with the exception that the 1937s has what appears to be a clad layer that obviously did not adhear to the copper surface. 	It looks to me like environmental damage from being exposed to, or reacting to substances that might include being buried in the ground for a period of years. The coin has a corroded surface. Just my opinion. Pete
