I have what I think is a clamshell; but I've not seen a clamshell where more than 1/2 or so of the edge is opened up. On this dime, it's open all the way around, spread maybe 1/32-1/64 of an inch. It shows no sign of having been cut, and the only thing holding the front to the back is a small spot of ??? in the center. There is no center layer.
Has anyone heard of this? Is it a common error, and I missed seeing it before?
Thanks!
Tammy

Firstly is it a clad dime. It is possible to acid dip a clad dime and the copper will disolve leaving the outer layers similar to what you are indicating. Photos would be nice to help make a determination.

Hi! Yes, it is clad. And I'd never heard of dipping it in acid. Would that leave the inside 'spot' in the center, also? Interesting....Is there a way to tell if it's been dipped? The finish looks quite normal.
I don't have any pictures of it--I'll try to get some made.
Thanks!
