1880 FR# 101 $10 Paper Note

Hi All,
 I have a 1880 FR# 101 JackAss $10.00 Note, with the Large Brown Seal, AND I also have a 1880 FR#71 ( with the Bruce-Gilfillan Signatures ) which is printed with the Red Serial Numbers and with the back side having the Columbian Bank Note Company engraving. BOTH are Uncirculated. I am looking to possibly sell them and was wondering if anyone can tell me their worth?, or a good website I can go to to find it's value or near value?, Where is the best, SAFEST place to sell Paper Notes like this ( I live in So Cal )?

You take a chance on ebay... you have people who have friends who bid up an item (this is a form of shill bidding).  Then, you have people who look in a book and don't know the market value of an item and that is what they will bid (book value) out of ignorance.

Now, you really step into the crap if you're dealing with Pawn Shops or run of the mill coin dealers.  I've seen dealers who think a seller is ignorant and offer one-half of book value for an item...  I saw a deal go down like that and I wanted to say something to the dealer.  When I was a novice... when I  first started collecting large size notes, I was taken to the cleaner by a supposedly honest dealer... and then he bragged about it months later. 

A reputable dealer will offer you about 7% less than MARKET value on a note.  But do your home work.  Your description of the notes without having seen them does not provide anyone the means to give a ball park figure to you.  There are other factors to consider with these large size notes.  A book is intended to give you a rough estimate... and remember the book was published months ago or last year.  Factors you should know about in collecting paper money are:

Plate number, where it was printed, signatures, serial number, plain or star note, rarity level, total number printed of a particular demonination... and I could go on and on.  Do your homework... as they say in the military " a ounce of sweat (thinking) can save a gallon of blood."  So, a few days or weeks of research could earn you in return a good profit.  Don't be a fool.  There are people out there who can examine your notes (if they are not rare or errors, etc.)  and tell you within $20 what it is worth.
